Latinos and their families in the U.S. continue to navigate institutional racism, oppression, and discrimination, underscoring the need for therapists equipped to intervene and support these families amid today's sociopolitical climate. Growing research suggests that ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) is a protective factor that mitigates the adverse effects of ethnic-racial discrimination. By translating ERS into the therapeutic context, therapists can serve as change agents who reinforce cultural pride and resilience by broaching and navigating these conversations with Latino families. This talk highlights the delivery of a recently developed, culturally tailored training program for therapists in San Diego that equipped them with practical ERS strategies to initiate explicit conversations with Latino families about ethnicity, culture, discrimination, and immigration, while affirming clients' experiences and addressing systemic inequities.
